Whoo-hoo!! I'm ironing with steam, now!

My dad always says, when you have a little luxury in your life or when you're making good progress, "You're cookin' with gas, now!" Well, hey, I'm really ironing with steam. My son, Paul, came to me some time last week and said that the iron was broken. How could it be broken? Did you drop it? No, but it isn't hot and water is running out of the holes... Well, I'm no ironing professional, but that did sound broken to me. I checked it out and it was as he said. Broken. That's the technical term I use when something doesn't work. Makes piecing a challenge. So I didn't. I've been meaning to get to Wal-mart and get me a new iron. Just trying to find the time. Around our house, irons are considered disposable. I break them so often, I can't see the sense in paying more than $10 for one. Usually, it happens when I trip over the cord. Or I bump into the ironing board. Grace is not my middle name. (And grace is not in my genes. My mom once stepped out of the car, hit an icy patch and completely disappeared. Mom? MOM? She had slid under the car. I do believe there was a small portion of her sticking out, but it wasn't obvious to the rest of us who were still in the car. Funny thing is, my dad had stopped the car by the door so she wouldn't have to walk so far over the ice. Knowing what a clutz she is. Now, my DH takes my arm and walks me to the car, when there's snow on the ground. I'd be offended, if it weren't truly a hazard. If I weren't truly a hazard.) Where was I? Oh, yes, getting a new iron. Well, one afternoon I make it out to my sewing room and, lo and behold, there's a new iron. And a new ironing board cover. Now, I bet he missed the iron as he likes his shirts without wrinkles, please. But how sweet of him to notice I needed an new cover! I'm impressed. When I asked him how much he paid for the iron, $30. I about fell over. Now you know what is going to happen... I'll bump into the ironing board as I'm tripping over the cord and it'll refuse to get hot and water will coming pouring out of the holes. Yep, it'll be broken.

LOL..Nines...I have the same gene-I can bump into or trip over anything without much trouble. Here I thought I was the only one-thanks for sharing. I also have trick knees that go out without warning, whoops, I am on the floor. Nice to have someone else treat you to a necessity for quilting-love the new cover too.
I think my dad said the same thing about cooking with gas!

Ohh, I think I love you Nines! I'm so clumsy that my husband doesn't even blink when I've dropped or broken ANOTHER something! :)

That being said... that's the sole reason why I don't eat or drink around my sewing stuff, cuz sooner or later I'm liable to spill or wreck my hard work. Or worse, my machine! Couldn't have that...

And yes, I've knocked my iron over countless times, and surprise, it still works! I paid $20 at WalMart or Target for a Black and Decker "Steam Advantage" one.

Your story is too funny! And my irons always start leaking like that when they get old too - hmmm I wonder why?

Who knew we had "iron killing" in common? Enjoyed our talk this afternoon! Thanks for helping me clean up the kitchen!

Love, Sarah

Irons are SO notorious for unexplained actions like leaping to their deaths!! I think they leap to their deaths when we aren't watching? And if they are caught by the cord in the process? Why they are bungie jumping of course! :c)

I've got a cordless Iron I've had a couple years now and I really like it...however I don't put water in it. I use a spray bottle to mist the fabric/clothes and then iron with a dry iron. I think it makes irons last longer!

As one who grew up with the nickname of Grace ... and deserves it to this day ... I really do relate.

I am afraid to leave my iron on the ironing board so I use it and set it on a nearby desk. My iron would try to do the hari kari thing, just to get out of work.

I'm with you! I am hard on irons and a clutz too. In fact, I'm sitting here reading the blogs waiting to stop bleeding so I can go back to quilting.

Kinda funny when we get excited about a new iron and ironing board cover but I do the same thing!

ROFL Nines! The visual image I got with your mom 'disappearing'...TOO funny! Yeah...I got that gene as well. Unfortunately, my oldest dd inherited it as well. Hopefully the iron will last a bit longer this time around. No fun with a broken iron!

maybe this fancy schmancy iron will have a stronger will to live and hang on tighter to the ironing board.

Hey Nines,

Great story about your dear Mom! Poor thing.

Have you seen those iron "holder thingies" that attach onto the end of your ironing board...and your iron can try to be out of harm's way? I think I've seen them in Keepsake and Clotilde, and maybe Connecting Threads, too
